Nevercenter has released Silo 2.5.2, the latest version of its lightweight modelling software, adding support for textures and materials when loading or saving files in the FBX file format.
A continuing trickle of updates
The release continues what is becoming a steady trickle of updates to Silo since Nevercenter resumed more active development of the software last year.

The capacities in Table 1 were obtained using a friction coefficient of 0.6, a reasonable estimate for as-cast concrete walls.
This time round, it's mainly bugfixes and UI updates, although there are two new features: when using the FBX file format, recently introduced in Silo 2.5, you can now load or save materials as well as geometry.
Contexts 3 5 1 – fast window switcher installer. The Material Editor also gets the option to set the Diffuse and Ambient colours of a material simultaneously, rather than having to adjust them both individually.
Since we last wrote about Silo, Nevercenter has also added support for 3ds Max-style smoothing groups, making it possible to control how different regions of a model are smoothed visually in the viewport.

Updated 8 March 2018: Silo 2.5.3 is out. New features this time round include a new 3D text tool with support for extrusion and tessellation, and the option to import PSD files.
The update also introduces a new live texture updating system, which automatically propagates any change made to the source texture file to Silo itself.
Updated 23 August 2018: Silo 2.5.5 is out. You can see a video of the main new feature – the new Segments and Rounding options for the Bevel tool – above.
Since we last wrote about the software, Nevercenter has also introduced support for Hi-DPI displays.
Updated 5 December 2018: Silo 2.5.6 is out. The update adds support for Pixologic's GoZ system, making it possible to send models back and forth between Silo and ZBrush.
The feature is still officially in beta, so you're advised not to use it in live production.
Pricing and availability
Silo 2.5.6 is available for Windows 7+ and Mac OS X 10.9+. Although Nevercenter introduced support for Linux in Silo 2.3, there doesn't actually seem to be a Linux build of any of the 2.5.x releases.
New licences of the software have an MSRP of $129, although every time we've looked recently, it has been available at a discount. The update is free to registered users.

- Maintenance Wool Felt: Vacuum occasionally to remove general airborne debris. Should soiling occur, spot clean with mild soap and lukewarm water. Avoid aggressive rubbing as this can continue the felting process and change the surface appearance of the felt.
- Wood: Wipe with a dry, lint-free cloth. Wash once a year with a mild soap (such as Dawn) and water solution, rinse with damp cloth, and dry immediately with a clean cotton cloth or towel.
- Acrylic: Using a microfiber cloth, wipe with a mild soap (such as Dawn) and water solution (1 teaspoon detergent to 1 quart lukewarm water). Scratches may be polished with Novus No. 1 Plastic Clean and Shine. Reapply regularly to maintain the anti-static, smudge, and scratch-resistant properties.
- Acqua Leather: Wipe with a cool, damp cloth. For tougher soiling, use a pH balanced soap (such as Dawn) on cloth and rinse. Though Acqua may be cleaned with harsh cleaning products such as bleach, do not use on the leather pull insert as it may damage the anodized aluminum pull.

Swedish born and educated in architecture, Carl Gustav Magnusson has dedicated his career to the design profession. After working with Ray and Charles Eames, he opened his namesake design studio in Rudolf Schindler's House in North Hollywood, California. Later as the Director of Design with Knoll for three decades, he worked with some of the most celebrated twentieth-century designers. Under his tenure, he established the Knoll Design Symposium at The Cranbrook Academy of the Arts and co-founded The Knoll Museum in East Greenville, Pennsylvania.
